Back to Basics with Eran Kolirin
What does it mean to create cinema in a time of uncertainty? And what happens when a leading filmmaker chooses to return to the place where it all began? In this intimate conversation with Eran Kolirin, acclaimed director of The Band’s Visit and Beyond the Mountains and Hills, we’ll delve into the creative process behind his new film, Some Notes on the Current Situation, which just had its world premiere at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival.
Shot quickly and with minimal resources, the film emerged from a need to artistically respond to the turbulent years we've been living through, and especially from an understanding that, in a time marked by an unofficial international boycott of Israeli cinema, there’s a renewed urgency for free, unapologetic creation that strives to capture the truth of the moment.
During the event, Kolirin will screen a scene from the film and share insights about the unique collaboration with the film’s actors - acting students from Kibbutzim College, who were full creative partners in the process. Together, we’ll reflect on the bold decision to forgo a large-scale production in favor of a raw, fast, and visceral cinematic response, and ask - how can we return to the simplicity and truth of cinema precisely when the ground is shaking?
