14-year old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry, who live in a small town in 1960’s Montana. Outside the town, a forest fire rages. When Jerry loses his job, his sense of purpose and masculinity are undermined, and he decides to join the fire fighting cause. He leaves his wife and son to deal with his absence, each in their own way.
