The story centers around Alice Bonnard, a young girl attending Saint-Sylvain Girls’ College, during her summer break in the turbulent 1960s, when she returns home to spend the holidays with her parents in the Landes region. They run a sawmill where they employ a young man, Jim. Business isn’t going well, and Alice’s return doesn’t help. She is attracted to Jim, but too scared to let him know, believing that as far as he’s concerned, she doesn’t exist. She hangs around him constantly but silence becomes a barrier. The closer she gets, the more impossible she finds it to speak…
